Signs it may be time to replace your HVAC system

One of the most important maintenance items in your home is your HVAC system. It heats, ventilates, and cools your home. If you are having issues with your system, how do you know if it’s worth the repair costs, or if you should just replace the whole system. If you have a good HVAC system that is regularly maintained, then your system will typically last for 15 to 20 years. Though the Department of Energy does recommend you replace your HVAC every 10-15 years. So how do you know if your system is in need of replacement?

Here are some signs that it might be time to replace your HVAC:

Poor air quality. Part of the HVAC duties is to provide proper ventilation and remove dust and debris in the air. If you’ve noticed more dust around your home, this could be the source of the issue. Also, mold, mildew, or unusual humidity levels could also be caused from a damaged air conditioner.

Unusual sounds and smells. Mostly the odd smells you may experience will be from the dust burning off, but it could also indicate damage to old wiring or components, that can also make unusual grinding or squealing sounds.

Frequent repair bills. Consistently having your HVAC repaired is definitely an indicator of a bigger problem. Frequent repair bills can add up or if the repair bill exceeds more than half the cost of a new one and it’s more than a decade old, then you should replace the system.

You can’t keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Temperature inconsistencies can be caused by a variety of factors, like an aging HVAC system or a faulty thermostat. But typically, it is caused by a system that is not powerful enough to supply air throughout the building or the ductwork was not installed properly.

Your energy bill keeps increasing. High energy bills are an indicator that your HVAC is losing its efficiency. Older systems tend to lose their efficiency as they age, especially if they are neglected. Having your system serviced twice a year will help keep your system in good shape and can stave off increasing energy bills. But if your system is old and worn, then it may be time to replace it.

If you are experiencing any of these issues, or debating on whether to repair or replace your system, then it’s a good idea to get into contact with a HVAC service provider. Call us today with your questions regarding your HVAC system!
